Simon will be patient 6,217

Baby Simon was born in the village on 22/8/24. His mother was home alone and gave birth on her own. She started to bleed seriously, and she died right there, next to her new born son. There was another complication, Simon's mother was HIV+, so there was a risk for Simon, especially because the birth took place at home instead of the health centre or Hospital . The next day, Simon was brought to Amecet, he was a small baby with a weight of 2 kg. and big, beautiful eyes.. He was weak and we had a lot of struggles with him, he was not doing so well, not gaining much, in the beginning not drinking good and he had several infections, which we had to treat him for.

When Simon came in Amecet, we had started him directly on Nevirapine, a medicine that we give to baby's who have a HIV+ mother. And most of the time, when we test the baby a month later, they are negative. We hoped that would also be the case for Simon, but we were a bit worried with Simon, because of his health struggles.

yesterday we went with Simon for testing, he was not fine, had a fever, but he was now 6 weeks old and we needed to know his HIV status. His weight is only 2.7 kg, so he didn't do much gaining in those 6 weeks.

This morning I got the results, they called me from the hospital, The result of Simon is positive, they found the HIV virus in his blood.... If I could come with him to the hospital, so they could start him on ARV's..

Together with our nurse, Immaculate we took Simon to the Clinic, which is called the White House, in Soroti Hospital. I have been there so many times, we have had so many HIV+ children who went here for their ARV medicines. The Clinic was build in 2009 by Amecet, with the money of de Figurant, a Dutch foundation which has blessed us throughout the years so much. They made him a file and his number is 6,217.. All those thousands of files were hanging in the room, children and adults who are HIV+ and who come here every couple of months for their medicines. Many of the Amecet children are hanging there somewhere between those files... I am so very thankful for the ARV medicines, I have seen what a difference it makes in the life's of the children. They come to life, they are shining again!!! I realised, while we were sitting there in that room, waiting for the doctor, that all those people, whose files were hanging there, would not be alive today without those ARV medicines.

So we do have hope for Simon, even when he is HIV+, even when he is still a very small weak little baby, there is hope for him. We got the medicines for him and tomorrow morning he will get his first dose, after that he will get every morning his ARV medicines and with the prayers of you and us, Simon can make it!!! It won't be easy, especially in the beginning, but we have hope for Simon!

Wat jammer voor Simon; zijn moeder overleden en hiv+. Fijn dat jullie zo goed voor hem zorgen.
