In the last 8 days, we received 3 preterm babies, very small, very weak. You see them on this picture, the oldest is at the left , she is 5 weeks old, than in the middle the baby of 3 weeks old and at the right the baby of 2 weeks old. Two of them are fed by NG tube, because they are too weak to drink themselves. Let me tell a bit more about them....
The oldest, Janet Rose, is 5 weeks old and her weight is only 1.360 kg. She was brought yesterday, so she is only one day in our home. The mother developed a mental problem, she refused to breastfeed the baby, she was forced to feed her baby, which was not working out of course. They struggled and the grandparents took the baby to care for. The mother is very young. They came via the Police to Amecet, asking for help.
Janet Rose must be a fighter, because being alive at 5 weeks and weighing only 1.3 kg... We feed her every 2 hours via a tube, because she is too weak to drink herself.
Janet Margret was brought 2 days ago by the grandmother, with a letter of the local counsellor in her village. Janet Margret is 3 weeks old and her weight is 1.665 kg. She is the biggest of the three!! Another sad story, her mother has since birth a mental problem, she never went to school, she is often just walking around for days and someone took advantage of her situation. She never wanted the baby, nobody knows who the father is and the grandmother tries to care for her daughter and now for her granddaughter as well. The baby didn't grow and she came for help...
Janet Margret is drinking herself, so that is good, we feed her every two hours... When she drinks good, we will go to every 3 hours.
Then we have James, he is the youngest of the three, he is now 2 weeks old and his weight is 1.650 kg.
He is 2 weeks in Amecet. We got a call from Soroti Hospital, from the nurse of the NICU (the Neonatal baby ward) His mother had given birth preterm, because she was suffering of cancer and was very sick. The family was very busy caring for her and they asked if we could help to look after James. He also was in need of special care and it was too much for them. So, James came to Amecet and we started to give him special formula by NG tube, because he didn't drink anything by himself. He only gained 200 grams in those 2 weeks, but at least he gained and had no other problems. The uncle came to visit James and told us that the mother had passed on.
The three preterm babies are all in our medical room. Normally we use that room when we have very sick children or, like now, for preterm babies. We placed an extra baby bed in the room and two of them share the bigger baby bed. Please pray for the three babies, that they will grow and gain. We give them special baby formula for babies with a low birth weight. And they get feeding every two hours, day and night. It is a big responsibility, pray for the staff who are caring for them. And pray for the families of the three babies, that they will be able to go back to their families, when they are strong and stable..
